Typical faith-based and secular recovery programs focus on attitude and behavior, using some version of behavior modification to help substance abusers resist temptation. While this information is helpful, this approach alone usually fails to result in lasting freedom from addiction because the abuser still has the heart of an addict.
The missing piece in recovery programs is that people are not heeding God’s call for all Christians to be transformed so that we progressively resemble Christ inwardly. Yet, answering this call is profoundly life-changing. If we do nothing to resolve the ways in which our hearts oppose God’s call to be transformed, we experience heart torment, angst and “dis-ease” that drives addiction and other self-destructive behaviors.
